My leadership philosophy was built upon the foundation of skills I learned during the completion of NURS 4830

NURS 3840:

I have learned how to identify what it means to be a nurse, as well as the expectations and roles of a nurse. By learning theories, techniques, and terms related to nursing I have been able to build upon my previous knowledge by utilizing the textbook, research, and videos. This course has taught me how to identify my own values and beliefs in order to apply them within the field of nursing and build my professional identity. I decided to become a nurse my second year of college after attending a medical mission trip. I witnessed how impactful healthcare and education was for people who currently have limited access. This experience, as well as clinical experiences at home, have shaped my values and goals when it comes to working as a nurse.

NURS 3810:

This course has changed my view on patient education and evidence-based practice. By looking at these studies, I have been able to realize that if a patient is not following instructions correctly or adhering to their medications and treatments, they may just not completely understand the risks and benefits of their diagnosis and treatment options. By ensuring understanding on the patient’s behalf, we can ensure that they are utilizing their right of autonomy and making decisions based on what they think is best for them. This course has taught me that as I develop my nursing practice, I want to continue to practice my assessments and improve my critical thinking in order to educate my patients on the best ways to prevent, catch early, or treat illnesses. I plan to not only assess my patients physically, but also assess their lifestyle preferences, personal beliefs, and learning styles in order to best educate them and develop a plan of care that they are most likely to adhere to.

NURS 3830:

This was one of the more time consuming and difficult courses for me, specifically with completing the PICO assignment and annotated bibliography. I am unsure whether this is a universally complex assignment or if I just chose a difficult PICO question but I spent a lot of time trying to find articles that matched all criteria required in order to get a “complete”. With that, I feel as though my research and writing skills have improved due to the amount of time I spent researching.

NURS 4830:

Although I was very intimidated by the thought of creating an e-portfolio, I believe this may have been my favorite course. I enjoy building creative projects, especially powerpoints, so this course was right up my alley. I have never created an e-portfolio before but once I got more comfortable on the platform I was using, I ended up really enjoying building the website. The short answer assignments gave me a chance to look further into the content we were learning and be able to use my critical-thinking. The powerpoint slideshow allowed me to use creativity to review a book while also learning more about how to be a good leader.
